Miracle on Ice

I remember the day very clearly. I was a youngster and had a neighbor who was a little older and a big hockey fanatic. When USA won we grabbed an American flag and drove around town waving it out the window. People were honking and cheering and I remember being very proud...and then very cold because we were driving with the windows rolled down in February.

It was one of those moments when fans remember where they were and what they were doing. It happened twice.

Exactly 30 years ago today, the US defeated the Soviet Union in the semifinals. The "Miracle on Ice" was during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York. The US defeated Finland later for the gold.

The less publicized—but no less miraculous—1960 U.S. men's hockey team also shocked the world with its stunning gold medal victories in Squaw Valley, Calif.
